The incidence of prostate cancer in men has been steadily increasing. It ranks third in the incidence of cancer in men, following lung and stomach cancer. Moreover, the number of prostate cancer patients is increasing by about 6% each year. Therefore, understanding the role of diet in maintaining prostate health is crucial.

1. Green Tea for Prostate Health

Green tea plays a significant role in prostate health, particularly in preventing prostate cancer, thanks to the antioxidant ‘catechin‘ it contains. Catechin is instrumental in reducing the levels of specific antigens that cause prostate cancer. A UCLA study found that when 20 patients awaiting prostate cancer surgery consumed five cups of green tea daily for five days, a notable decrease in prostate cancer cells was observed. Green tea is also beneficial for overall prostate health, effective in alleviating benign prostatic hyperplasia.

2. Lycopene in Tomatoes and Prostate Health

The lycopene found in tomatoes is highly beneficial for prostate health. As a potent antioxidant, lycopene helps eliminate reactive oxygen species in the body and inhibits the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. Research by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) reveals that men who consume a high amount of lycopene have a significantly lower risk of developing prostate cancer. The study shows a 1% decrease in prostate cancer risk for every additional 1mg of lycopene consumed daily. Since lycopene is fat-soluble, its absorption is better when tomatoes are cooked in oil.

3. Sulforaphane in Broccoli and Prostate Protection

Sulforaphane, found in broccoli, possesses properties that inhibit cancer cell growth, making it a potential ally in preventing prostate cancer. The National Cancer Institute‘s research indicates that regular consumption of broccoli or cauliflower significantly reduces the incidence of prostate cancer. Men who ate these vegetables at least once a week saw their risk of developing prostate cancer halved, with a lower likelihood of cancer metastasis.
